Fall 2008 Home School College Fair Features Gap Year Seminar Speaker
Ethan Knight, executive director of Carpe Diem International will discuss the benefits of a gap year between high school and college at the upcoming Pacific Northwest Homeschool College Fair in Bothell, Washington. Portland-based Carpe Diem offers three-month group semesters abroad to gap year students.
Demand for Student Gap Year Programs Growing
A September article in the Oregonian newspaper titled 'More Oregon Teens Take Gap year Before High School', reported that "in a little more than a year, Carpe Diem has doubled its offerings, adding three programs that take students to East Africa, Southeast Asia and South America. In East Africa, for instance, students volunteer at an HIV/AIDS clinic in Uganda, cross the border to Tanzania, ferry across Lake Victoria, study Swahili, take a three-day trek with local tribes and volunteer with street kids who live near the base of Mount Kilimanjaro."
About Pacific Northwest Homeschool College Fairs
The Pacific Northwest Homeschool College Fair 2008 will be held on Saturday October 25th, from 10 a.m. to 4p.m., at Cascadia Community College, Bothell, Washington. The fair is free to attendees. Interested colleges and presenters are encouraged to visit the fair's web site for more details and contact information at www.pnwcollegefair.com
This fair, in its second year, is organized by homeschoolers for homeschoolers. It is hosted by the Attic Learning Community, a homeschool organization in Woodinville, Wa. serving ages 5-18, (www.the-attic.org), and Cascadia Community College located in Bothell, Washington. The mission is to empower homeschoolers by providing opportunities to make personal connections with diverse colleges, explore college options, and find information on the path to college. Last year’s attendance was over 400 motivated homeschoolers and families, and this year they expect many more! They are excited about adding information on Gap Year programs to the fair, as the homeschooling community is open to a variety of experiences and well suited to the flexibility and growth these programs provide.
