AmeriCorps- How to Choose the Right Program for You

A friend recently asked me what was the difference between AmeriCorps’ Vista and AmeriCorps NCCC programs? I had a hard time explaining so I decided to check out the AmeriCorps website Here’s what I found out:

AmeriCorps is actually a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, an independent federal agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. AmeriCorps actually offers 3 programs that each provide a slightly different community service experience.

AmeriCorps State and National supports a broad range of local service programs that engage thousands of Americans in intensive service to meet critical community needs. These include education, environmental, public health and safety, and disaster preparation and response. Sample activities include tutoring and mentoring youth, assisting crime victims, building homes, and restoring parks. AmeriCorps members also mobilize community volunteers and strengthen the capacity of the organizations where they serve. You must be at least 17 years to join and you can serve either part time or full time for 9-12 months.

AmeriCorps VISTA provides full-time members to community organizations and public agencies to create and expand programs that build capacity and ultimately bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty. The emphasis here is really on addressing the issue of poverty. Participants work full time for a year at a non-profit or local government agency and stay in one community for the entire time. Sample activities here include fighting illiteracy, improving health services, creating businesses and strengthening the community. The age requirement is 18 and the program seeks college grads or people who have had a few years of work experience.

AmeriCorps NCCC- National Civilian Community Corps is a full-time residential program for men and women, ages 18-24, that strengthens communities while developing leaders through direct, team-based national and community service. Members live on one of four campuses, located in Denver, Colorado; Sacramento, California; Perry Point, Maryland and Vinton, Iowa. They serve in teams of ten to twelve and are assigned to projects throughout the region served by their campus. This involves relocation and travel during the 10-month service period. Sample activities include: trail clearing, disaster relief, renovating houses, tutoring kids, clean up stream and more! Projects usually last from 6-8 weeks.

Many AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance that covers basic expenses, and help with college costs and student loans in the form of an AmeriCorps Education Award for members who successfully complete service in AmeriCorps, or a $1,200 post-service stipend. You can use your AmeriCorps Education Award to pay educational expenses at qualified institutions of higher education, for educational training, or to repay qualified student loans. The Segal AmeriCorps Eduction award is $4,725 for a year of full-time service, and is prorated for part-time. You have up to seven years after your term of service has ended to claim the award, and at time you use the award, you must have received a high school diploma, or the equivalent of such a diploma.

For full time service you may also receive healthcare benefits while in service, childcare assistance, student loan forbearance or deferment and one year of noncompetitive status for a federal government job.

Other benefits they list are: valuable experience in an area that interests you that can translate directly into job experience in your chosen field, teamwork, communication, responsibility, and other essential skills that will help you for the rest of your life while gaining the personal satisfaction of taking on a challenge and seeing results.
